Lynchburg, VA – An enhanced severe weather threat is in effect tonight for portions of central and western Virginia, with damaging wind gusts and large hail expected to impact areas through 7 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, areas along and north of Interstate 64 fall under a Level 3 (Enhanced Risk) for severe storms. This includes locations in and around Lewisburg, WV. Meanwhile, a Level 2 (Slight Risk) zone extends along Highway 460 from Bluefield, WV to Lynchburg, VA. Roanoke and Wytheville remain within a Level 1 (Marginal Risk) zone.
The primary concern is damaging wind gusts exceeding 60 mph. Quarter-size hail is also possible, along with the low but potential risk for isolated tornadoes. The severe weather is expected to peak during the evening and overnight hours before tapering off early Tuesday.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, charge devices in case of power outages, and stay weather-aware with NOAA alerts or local news updates. Those in mobile homes or high-profile vehicles should seek sturdier shelter, especially during peak wind periods.
Drivers along I-64 and HWY 460 should remain cautious due to rapidly changing conditions and possible debris on roads.
