Kansas City, MO – Strong thunderstorms could hammer northwest Missouri Tuesday afternoon, with large hail and damaging winds posing the biggest threat.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, storms are expected to develop after 2 p.m. Tuesday, primarily impacting areas along and north of I-35, including Atchison, St. Joseph, and Kansas City. Gusts over 50 mph and hail exceeding one inch in diameter are possible. Residents should avoid non-essential travel and secure outdoor items.

The risk of widespread severe weather diminishes after Tuesday evening, but summer heat builds quickly. Highs will climb into the mid-to-upper 80s by Wednesday and could hit 90°F by Thursday. Winds will increase midweek, with gusts reaching 24 mph Monday afternoon and continuing through Wednesday.

Most of the workweek stays dry after Tuesday’s storms, with low overnight humidity helping nighttime temps dip into the upper 60s. However, scattered thunderstorms could return Thursday and Friday, especially in the afternoon hours. Weekend weather looks unsettled, with daily storm chances through Saturday.
