Jasper County, IN – A fatal train collision near McCoysburg disrupted travel and prompted a large emergency response Saturday morning after an Amtrak train struck a semi-truck at a rural railroad crossing.
According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 8:10 a.m. on April 18 near County Road 210 East. Dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting a train versus semi-truck collision, along with confirmation from Amtrak crew members that the train had struck a truck and trailer.
Officials said the train was carrying approximately 94 passengers in addition to crew members. Emergency responders from multiple agencies, including Jasper County EMS, Keener Township EMS, Wheatfield EMS, and surrounding fire departments, were dispatched to the scene along with Indiana State Police.
Preliminary findings indicate the semi-truck was traveling northbound on County Road 210 East when it entered the crossing. Investigators confirmed that railroad crossing signs and stop signs were in proper position at the time. A westbound Amtrak train then struck the truck as it crossed the tracks.
The semi-truck driver, whose identity has not yet been released, was transported to IU Health Hospital in Lafayette, where he later died from his injuries. Approximately four to five other individuals sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Passengers aboard the train were safely evacuated and transported by bus to a secure location while authorities conducted their investigation.
The crash remains under investigation by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department with assistance from Indiana State Police. Officials say additional information will be released as it becomes available.
