Mexico, NY – More than 300 animals have been rescued across Oswego County in just over a month, prompting urgent calls for community support as local animal welfare teams manage back-to-back large-scale operations.

According to the Oswego County SPCA (OCSPCA), the latest rescue effort took place April 17, 2026, in Mexico, New York, where crews assisted the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office in removing over 150 animals from a single property. The animals included a mix of livestock, exotic species, and domestic pets, all requiring immediate care, transport, and placement planning.

The response follows a similar large-scale rescue less than 30 days earlier, bringing the total number of animals assisted in recent weeks to more than 300. Officials say the rapid succession of cases has stretched resources and highlighted the growing need for early intervention.

OCSPCA leaders said volunteers played a critical role, assisting with animal handling, documenting conditions, and coordinating emergency sheltering. The organization does not operate a shelter facility and relies entirely on foster homes, partner rescues, and community donations to support operations.

“The severity of these cases often develops over time,” the organization said, noting that earlier reporting of suspected neglect could prevent situations from escalating.

As recovery and placement efforts continue, the OCSPCA is asking for donations of supplies, financial contributions, and additional foster volunteers. Emergency veterinary care, feed, and housing remain among the most urgent needs.

Officials say animals from the recent rescues are currently undergoing medical evaluations and stabilization before becoming available for adoption.
