Springfield, MO – Dangerous heat will continue across southwest Missouri through at least Friday, and forecasters say there’s a growing chance the oppressive conditions will persist into the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a Heat Advisory remains in effect through Friday, July 3, with daily heat index values between 100 and 106 degrees expected across much of the region.

Afternoon temperatures combined with high humidity will create hazardous conditions, while overnight lows will only cool into the 72 to 78-degree range, offering little relief for those without adequate air conditioning.

The National Weather Service said there is now a 40% to 60% chance that excessive heat will continue through the Fourth of July weekend, meaning holiday celebrations could take place under prolonged dangerous conditions.

Forecasters are encouraging residents with outdoor plans to prepare now by ensuring they have access to water, shade, and cooling options during holiday events.

Officials recommend:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade.
  • Avoid prolonged strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended inside vehicles.
  • Check on older adults, neighbors, and others who may be vulnerable to heat-related illness.

The Weather Prediction Center’s extended outlook continues to highlight much of the central and eastern United States for hazardous heat through early next week.

While forecast confidence decreases beyond Friday, residents are encouraged to monitor updates as heat advisories or additional alerts may be extended into the holiday weekend if temperatures remain above dangerous thresholds.
