Jackson, Mississippi — Strong to severe thunderstorms could disrupt travel and knock out power across central Mississippi Wednesday afternoon and night, with the highest impacts expected in Jackson, Vicksburg, Meridian, Greenwood and Hattiesburg.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Level 2 of 5 risk is in place for Wednesday, with storms developing by mid-afternoon and intensifying into the evening hours.

This is part of a broader system moving across the South that will bring increasing moisture and instability ahead of a cold front.

Damaging wind gusts near 60 mph could snap tree limbs and cause scattered outages, while hail may damage vehicles and roofs. Heavy rain may quickly create slick roads and standing water, especially in low-lying areas and underpasses near downtown Jackson and along I-55 and I-20 where visibility could drop suddenly.

The most active window is expected between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., with storms continuing into late evening across eastern Mississippi near Meridian.

Residents should secure outdoor items before storms arrive and avoid driving during the peak window. Drivers should not attempt to cross water-covered roads and should be prepared for sudden drops in visibility.

The greatest risk for travel disruption and wind damage will occur between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Wednesday.
