Duluth, MN – Dangerous weather conditions are gripping the Lake Superior shoreline this morning, with freezing spray and gale-force winds persisting through mid-morning. Travelers and mariners are urged to exercise extreme caution as wind gusts near 40 mph create hazardous conditions on roads and waterways.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Duluth, gale warnings and heavy freezing spray warnings remain in effect for areas along Lake Superior, including Silver Bay and Grand Marais. The strongest winds are expected to subside by late morning, but high waves and icy conditions will linger until afternoon.
Local residents should be prepared for slick roads, particularly near shoreline routes, such as Minnesota State Highway 61. Boaters are advised to avoid the water until conditions stabilize. The freezing spray could quickly coat surfaces, leading to ice buildup and reduced traction.
Today’s high temperature in Duluth is expected to reach 21°F, with northwesterly winds of 15 to 20 mph diminishing by the afternoon. A slight chance of snow is possible tonight, with lows near 11°F and calmer winds from the west.
Looking ahead, Friday will see partly sunny skies with highs around 25°F and light winds. The weekend forecast includes a warming trend, with Saturday reaching 36°F and a chance of rain Sunday. However, snow and blustery winds could return late Sunday night into Monday.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the NWS and report snowfall measurements to local authorities. Stay informed and cautious as winter weather continues to impact the region.
