Champaign, IL – Tropical Storm Francine is expected to impact Central Illinois by Friday, bringing beneficial rain to the region. As Francine strengthens into a hurricane near the Gulf Coast, it is expected to weaken into a tropical depression before reaching Illinois.
According to the US National Weather Service, Francine is forecast to bring significant rainfall to parts of the Midwest, particularly southeast of I-70. Rain is expected late Thursday into Friday, with a 50-70% chance of more than an inch of rainfall.
While some areas may receive heavy rainfall, timing and amounts remain uncertain due to the storm’s track. Officials urge residents to monitor updates as Francine moves north. Wind gusts and localized flooding could accompany the rain.
Despite the uncertainties, the rain is expected to provide much-needed relief to dry areas. Central Illinois has experienced below-average rainfall in recent months, making Francine’s precipitation potentially beneficial for agriculture. More updates are expected as the storm progresses.
