Chicago, IL – Temperatures will plunge below freezing late Sunday night across a multi-state region, creating dangerous conditions for outdoor pets as lows drop into the 20s by early Monday.
According to multiple National Weather Service offices, Freeze Watches stretch from Illinois and Indiana through Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and into parts of West Virginia, with subfreezing temperatures expected between midnight and 8 a.m. Monday. In some areas of Michigan and the Great Lakes, temperatures could fall as low as 20°F, while much of the Midwest and Ohio Valley drops into the upper 20s to near 30°F.
Major metro areas including Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh will all experience the cold snap, with widespread frost developing before a harder freeze sets in overnight. While roads remain dry, the primary concern shifts to living conditions outdoors—especially for pets and animals exposed to the cold.
Veterinarians warn that temperatures below 32°F can stress small or short-haired animals, while prolonged exposure near 20°F increases the risk of hypothermia. Pet owners should bring animals indoors, provide insulated shelter if outdoor housing is unavoidable, and ensure access to unfrozen water. Garages and sheds can trap cold air and are not safe substitutes.
The freeze will ease after sunrise Monday, but another round of subfreezing temperatures is likely Monday night into Tuesday farther east. Additional alerts may expand as the cold air mass pushes toward the Mid-Atlantic.
