Grand Rapids, MI – Skywatchers across Michigan still have another opportunity tonight to catch the Lyrid meteor shower, with activity continuing into early Friday morning, April 24.

According to the US National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, while the peak occurred overnight, the meteor shower will remain active, offering additional chances to see meteors under favorable conditions tonight. Skies may feature some passing clouds, but breaks could allow for decent viewing.

The Lyrids typically produce fewer than 10 meteors per hour, but occasional brighter streaks are still possible. Conditions are expected to improve after midnight as the crescent moon lowers toward the western horizon, reducing glare and enhancing visibility.

Viewers should look toward the northeastern sky near the bright star Vega, where the meteors appear to originate. The best viewing window will be during the late-night and pre-dawn hours when skies are darkest.

Residents across Kent County, Ottawa County, and the greater West Michigan region are encouraged to head away from city lights for the best experience.

While activity will gradually diminish in the coming nights, tonight offers one more solid chance for those who missed the peak to catch the annual meteor display.
