Gaylord, MI – A powerful winter storm is sweeping across Northern Michigan, bringing heavy snow, gusty winds, and hazardous travel conditions through Saturday morning. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel as visibility is expected to drop rapidly on roadways, including US-131.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 4 a.m. Saturday. Snow accumulations between 5 to 9 inches are expected, with some areas seeing even higher totals. Winds gusting up to 35 mph will contribute to drifting snow and difficult driving conditions, particularly during evening commutes.
Travelers are advised to keep an emergency kit in their vehicles, including flashlights, food, and water. For those venturing outdoors, dressing in layers and avoiding prolonged exposure to the elements is critical.
Looking ahead, the snow will taper off by Saturday afternoon, but temperatures will remain in the mid-20s, making roads slick into the weekend. Another weather system could bring light snow showers on Sunday, with clearer skies expected Monday.
State officials recommend checking road conditions at MiDrive.com before traveling. If you must drive, reduce speed, leave extra distance between vehicles, and use headlights in low-visibility areas.
