Gaylord, Michigan — Temperatures will drop to near or below freezing overnight, threatening vegetation and creating patchy slick spots on roads across Gaylord, Traverse City, Alpena, Petoskey and Cadillac between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, clearing skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall into the mid-20s to lower 30s by daybreak. The coldest window is expected from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m., when inland areas away from the Great Lakes will see the most widespread frost and freezing conditions.
Sub-freezing temperatures can kill sensitive plants within hours and may stress early-season crops. Frost forming on bridges and elevated roadways, including stretches of US-131 near Gaylord and M-32 near Alpena, could create slick patches for early drivers. Low-lying rural areas and sheltered valleys near Cadillac and interior sections of northern Lower Michigan will cool fastest, increasing freeze severity.
This is part of a broader system bringing unseasonably cold air into the Great Lakes region following recent mild conditions.
Residents should cover or bring in plants, protect outdoor plumbing, and use caution on early morning drives where frost may develop, especially on bridges and overpasses.
The most critical freeze and frost impacts will occur between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. Saturday, when temperatures bottom out across northern Michigan.
