Holland, MI – As boating season gets underway across Michigan, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents and visitors to prioritize safety before heading out on the water.

According to a post shared by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, boaters are encouraged to follow a list of precautionary measures aimed at reducing accidents and ensuring a safer recreational experience. With warmer temperatures drawing more people to the water, officials say awareness and preparation are key.

The department’s boating safety tips include wearing a life jacket, checking weather and water conditions beforehand, remaining alert to surroundings, and sharing a float plan with a family member or friend. Boaters are also advised to keep their safety gear updated, avoid operating watercraft under the influence, use an engine cut-off switch, and know the applicable boating laws in Michigan.

The reminder comes as state and local agencies typically see an uptick in water-related emergencies between June and August. The U.S. Coast Guard reports that life jacket use and sober boating are two of the most effective ways to prevent injuries and fatalities during boating activities.

Ottawa County officials urge boaters to educate themselves on safety procedures and to not assume experience alone will prevent accidents.

For more information on Michigan boating laws or to access safety resources, residents can visit the Michigan Department of Natural Resources website or contact their local sheriff’s marine patrol unit.
