Melbourne, Florida – A moderate rip current risk is creating dangerous swimming conditions along east central Florida beaches today, posing an immediate hazard for anyone entering the water.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, the rip current threat will persist through at least 8 p.m. Sunday as onshore winds strengthen with the afternoon sea breeze. Beaches from Daytona Beach to Vero Beach, including Cocoa Beach and Melbourne Beach, face the highest risk, especially during peak afternoon hours.

Air temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 80s across the region, including 89 degrees in Orlando and 85 degrees in Melbourne. While most areas remain dry, a 20 to 30 percent chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms could develop along the Treasure Coast later this afternoon, potentially bringing brief downpours and lightning.

Winds shifting onshore will increase wave action along the coast, enhancing the likelihood of rip currents capable of pulling swimmers away from shore. Lifeguards strongly advise swimming only in designated areas and avoiding the water if conditions appear rough.

Beachgoers should stay aware of posted flags, avoid swimming alone, and know how to escape a rip current by swimming parallel to shore. Inland areas will see mostly dry conditions with light winds.

The rip current risk remains in place through this evening, with updates expected if surf conditions worsen or storms become more widespread.
