Medford, Oregon – Isolated to scattered thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across southern Oregon and northern California from Friday afternoon through late Saturday night, with the most severe impacts expected Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, elevated lightning risk and gusty outflow winds of 20–40 mph will threaten areas from Yreka and Mount Shasta north through Klamath Falls, Lakeview, and Chemult, mainly between 5 a.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Sunday. Counties at highest risk include Jackson, Klamath, and Lake counties in Oregon, along with Siskiyou County in California. The threat zone narrows on Saturday night, with storms lingering east of the Cascades and coverage decreasing.

Hazards include dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning, brief heavy rain, small hail, and wind gusts strong enough to down trees and powerlines. Residents with outdoor plans—especially near mountain summits, lakes, or open fields—should have an emergency shelter plan ready if a storm develops nearby. Power outages and sudden road closures are possible, especially along Highway 97, I-5, and rural routes.

Storms are also elevating wildfire risk in grasslands and forests. Stay weather aware, charge devices, and avoid non-essential travel in highlighted areas. Another update is expected by Saturday morning as conditions evolve.
