Boston, Massachusetts – Drivers and pedestrians across southern New England face a slippery start to Thursday as freezing fog and overnight refreezing turn wet pavement into patches of black ice before 9 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a mix of melting snow, temperatures below 32 degrees, and areas of freezing fog have created icy conditions on untreated roads and sidewalks across much of Massachusetts, northern Connecticut, and all of Rhode Island. The risk remains elevated through the height of the morning commute.

In Massachusetts, communities from Springfield and Worcester to Boston, Brockton, and Plymouth are reporting slick secondary roads. Elevated stretches of I-90, I-93, Route 24 and I-495 are especially vulnerable. In Connecticut, Hartford, Tolland, and Windham counties are seeing icy patches, while Providence, Warwick, and Newport in Rhode Island contend with reduced visibility that may dip near 500 feet at times.

Transportation crews are treating major roadways, but neighborhood streets, parking lots, and walkways remain icy. Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Pedestrians should use caution on untreated sidewalks.

Temperatures should rise above freezing by late morning, easing conditions, but additional advisories are possible if fog lingers into early Friday.
