Oakland, Md. – Sudden snow squalls capable of dropping visibility to near zero are expected across the Allegheny Mountains today, creating dangerous travel conditions through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday for Garrett County in Maryland, Western Highland County in Virginia, and parts of eastern West Virginia including Grant and Pendleton counties. Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with intense squalls capable of producing snowfall rates up to 1.5 inches per hour.
Communities including Oakland, Grantsville, and areas along U.S. Route 219 and Interstate 68 will see rapidly changing conditions, especially from late morning into the afternoon. Winds gusting up to 50 mph earlier today may continue to bring down tree limbs, adding to road hazards.
Drivers are urged to slow down and check 511 services for real-time conditions. Snow squalls can develop quickly, coating roads in minutes and leading to sudden whiteout conditions.
Snow will taper late this afternoon, but gusty winds and lingering slick spots may continue to impact travel into the evening.
