Washington, D.C. – Snow-covered streets and gusty winds are creating slick travel conditions across the D.C. metro area before sunrise Monday, with up to 2 inches of accumulation expected before mid-morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Monday for the District of Columbia, Southern Baltimore, Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Charles, Montgomery and Howard counties in Maryland, along with Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria and Prince William counties in Virginia. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph, blowing snow across roadways and reducing visibility at times.

Major routes including Interstate 95, I-495, I-66 and I-270 may become slick, especially on bridges and overpasses. The Monday morning commute faces the greatest risk for slowdowns and minor accidents as temperatures hover near freezing.

Farther west, Extreme Western Allegany County in Maryland and Western Mineral County in West Virginia remain under an advisory until 6 p.m. Monday for 1 to 3 inches of additional snow and gusts up to 45 mph, impacting travel along I-68 and U.S. 220.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for updated road conditions. Snow will taper late this morning across the metro area, but slick spots may linger into midday.
