Cumberland, MD – Authorities are investigating the death of Robert Warren, 28, an inmate at the North Branch Correctional Institution.
Warren was found unresponsive in his cell Monday and was declared dead by emergency medical personnel. Officials later ruled his death a homicide following an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Maryland State Police identified a suspect, also an inmate, but no charges have been filed. Officials are withholding the suspect’s name until charges are finalized.
The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit requested assistance from the State Police Homicide Unit. Investigators and crime scene technicians are working to uncover what happened.
This marks the latest in a string of incidents raising concerns about safety in Maryland’s correctional system. Local residents expressed frustration, urging state officials to improve prison security.
Authorities will present findings to the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
