Man Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash on U.S. Route 20 in Kane County

Rutland Township, IL – A Hampshire man died Sunday afternoon following a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 20 near Illinois Route 47.

Deputies responded at 12:35 p.m. to find a heavily damaged 2017 Dodge Journey in a ditch after striking a tree. The sole occupant, 75-year-old Robert Skarbonkiewicz, was unconscious at the scene.

According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Mr. Skarbonkiewicz was heading eastbound when his vehicle veered off the road for unknown reasons. Emergency crews, including the Pingree Grove Fire Department, provided medical aid before transporting him to Advocate Sherman Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

Authorities confirmed Mr. Skarbonkiewicz wore his seatbelt during the crash, and airbags deployed inside the vehicle. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the accident.

Officials thanked multiple agencies for their assistance, including the Hampshire Police Department and Kane County Drone Team. Sheriff Ron Hain expressed condolences to the Skarbonkiewicz family for their loss.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office urges drivers to remain vigilant and report unsafe road conditions when traveling.
