Winnipeg, MB – A man died in police custody early Sunday morning after being arrested on King Edward Street East. Winnipeg Police said officers arrested the individual around 3:53 a.m. for an outstanding warrant. He was transported to police headquarters on Smith Street and placed in a holding cell after receiving medical clearance.
At 7:30 a.m., officers discovered the man unresponsive during a routine arousal check. Onsite paramedics administered emergency medical care before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba is leading the inquiry into the man’s death. The IIU, responsible for investigating police-related incidents resulting in serious harm or death, will oversee the case.
Police officials have not released the man’s identity or the cause of death. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with inquiries is urged to contact the IIU for updates.
