A Maine man was shot and killed Monday after an hours-long standoff with police in Aroostook County.
According to Maine State Police, officers responded to a domestic dispute at a Portage residence. A woman reported Steven Righini had pushed her into a wall. She escaped with their 4-week-old infant and called for help.
Troopers attempted to take Righini into custody, but he resisted. He pulled a gun and fired at officers before retreating inside. When police backed away, he fired again, striking Deputy Shane Campbell.
Police negotiated for hours, but Righini refused to surrender. He attempted to flee in a vehicle, but officers disabled it. He then ran on foot, fired at a police K9 unit, and pointed a gun at troopers. Officers shot him, and he died at the scene.
K9 Preacher later died from injuries. Campbell was treated and released. The investigation is ongoing.
