Portland, Maine – Drivers across southern Maine and much of New Hampshire face snow-covered and icy roads through 4 a.m. Wednesday, with a light glaze of ice creating slick bridges and overpasses before daybreak.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 a.m. for interior and coastal York and Cumberland counties, Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties in Maine, and a wide stretch of central, northern and southern New Hampshire. An additional inch of snow may fall before precipitation tapers, bringing storm totals to 3 to 5 inches. Southern New Hampshire could also see up to one-tenth of an inch of ice.
Communities including Portland, South Portland, Biddeford and Saco in Maine, along with Manchester, Nashua, Concord and Portsmouth in New Hampshire, are reporting snow-packed secondary roads. Even minor ice accumulation may make untreated stretches of Interstate 95, Interstate 93 and Route 16 slippery through the early morning commute.
Temperatures hovering near freezing will allow snow and ice to cling to pavement, especially on elevated surfaces. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and check NewEngland511.org for updated road conditions before heading out.
Precipitation will wind down toward sunrise, but slick spots could linger into midmorning as crews continue treatment. Additional advisories are not expected once this system exits.
