Traverse City, Mich. – Scorching temps and moderate wave risks could challenge beachgoers across Northern Michigan Saturday, with thunderstorms and cooler air set to move in by Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, heat indices in northern lower Michigan will reach the low to mid-90s on Saturday, with highs topping out between 82°F and 96°F. Breezy southwest winds will stir up Lake Michigan, leading to 2–4 foot waves and a moderate swim risk—meaning swimming is discouraged. Conditions will remain calmer on Lake Huron, where wave heights are under 2 feet and the swim risk is low.

A chance for strong storms builds late Saturday night, especially in northeast lower and eastern upper Michigan. Sunday brings widespread showers and storms across north central and northeast lower Michigan, dropping highs to the upper 60s and low 80s. The wettest weather is expected Sunday morning into early afternoon.

Beachgoers are advised to stay off Lake Michigan piers, monitor changing weather, and avoid swimming in areas with strong currents. Drink plenty of water and limit sun exposure during peak afternoon hours Saturday.

Rain is expected to taper off Sunday night with partly sunny, seasonable weather returning by Monday.
