Jackson, Kentucky – Drivers across eastern Kentucky have less than a few hours before icy patches peak on bridges and overpasses, creating slick spots that could disrupt the Monday morning commute through 11 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Bath, Elliott, Fleming and Rowan counties until 11 a.m. Monday. Forecasters expect mixed precipitation, including a light glaze of ice on elevated surfaces and less than one inch of snow and sleet accumulation.

Statewide, the biggest concern centers on untreated bridges and secondary roads, where surface temperatures hover near freezing. In Flemingsburg, Morehead, Sandy Hook and Owingsville, drivers may encounter slippery stretches on rural routes and elevated sections of KY-32 and KY-60. Even minor ice accumulation can create sudden loss of traction, especially before mid-morning.

Transportation officials urge motorists to slow down and allow extra stopping distance. Officials recommend checking live road conditions at GoKY before heading out and avoiding unnecessary travel until temperatures rise.

Conditions should steadily improve after late morning as readings climb well above freezing by late Monday afternoon. Melting is expected to continue into Tuesday, but slick spots may linger in shaded areas until midday. Additional updates will be issued if conditions worsen.
