Wichita, KS – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita has issued a heat advisory through Tuesday as triple-digit heat indices are expected to engulf the region. The advisory, in effect since early Sunday, warns of extreme heat that poses significant health risks.

According to the NWS, the heat index is predicted to reach 106°F in Salina and Topeka today, with other cities like Wichita, Hutchinson, and Harper facing similar high heat indices around 103°F. On Monday, the heat index is expected to climb further, reaching 109°F in Salina and 108°F in Topeka and Wichita.

Tuesday’s forecast continues the trend with heat indices remaining perilously high, especially in southern Kansas. Emporia and Eureka are expected to hit 103°F and 105°F respectively, while Coffeyville could see temperatures up to 106°F.

Residents are advised to take precautions, such as staying indoors during peak heat hours, hydrating frequently, and taking breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas if outdoor activities are necessary. The extreme temperatures can cause heat exhaustion or heat stroke, particularly in vulnerable populations like the elderly and young children.

The extended forecast shows a slight reprieve midweek, with temperatures dropping to the upper 80s on Wednesday, accompanied by a chance of showers. However, the heat is expected to return later in the week, with highs in the mid to upper 80s from Thursday to Friday.
