Syracuse, Kansas – Drivers in southwest Kansas are waking up to near-zero visibility this morning as dense fog blankets the region, prompting a travel advisory through 10 a.m. CDT.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for Hamilton, Kearny, and Stanton counties—including the cities of Syracuse, Lakin, Deerfield, and Johnson City—until 9 a.m. MDT / 10 a.m. CDT. Visibility in some areas has dropped below one-quarter mile, creating hazardous conditions for early commuters.
The thick fog is impacting U.S. Highway 50 and other major rural routes, particularly around Lakin and Syracuse, where limited sight distance could cause delays or accidents. Local law enforcement urges drivers to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra space between vehicles.
School bus routes and morning freight traffic may also be affected, with lingering fog expected to lift gradually by mid-morning. Officials recommend postponing non-essential travel until after the advisory expires.
Fog advisories of this intensity are uncommon this late in April, adding to the challenge for drivers unprepared for reduced visibility. Another update is expected later this morning if conditions worsen or persist beyond the advisory window.
