Garnett, Kansas – Flash flooding is swamping roads and low-lying areas across Anderson County as slow-moving thunderstorms drop inches of rain Tuesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 5 p.m. CDT. Emergency management reported that 2 to 4 inches of rain have already fallen, with another 1 to 3 inches possible as storms continue to move through. Flash flooding is ongoing.
Flooded areas include Garnett, Greeley, Colony, Westphalia, and Kincaid, as well as smaller communities like Lone Elm and Harris. Garnett Airport is also within the warning zone. Drivers are urged to avoid Highway 169 and local routes prone to flooding, especially near creeks and underpasses.
Residents should stay off the roads, monitor emergency alerts, and move to higher ground if flooding threatens their location. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains critical advice as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
The flood threat will continue into the evening, with more advisories likely if rain persists.
