Topeka, Kansas – Drivers across Shawnee and northern Osage counties are being urged to avoid low-lying roads this afternoon as torrential rain triggers flash flooding across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, a Flash Flood Warning is in effect until 3:30 p.m. CDT Tuesday. Doppler radar and local gauges recorded 1 to 2.5 inches of rain, with an additional 1 to 2 inches possible in the coming hours. Urban areas, creeks, and roads are especially vulnerable, with flooding already reported or imminent.
Areas under the warning include Topeka, Carbondale, Silver Lake, Rossville, Auburn, Overbrook, and surrounding communities. Major highways like Interstate 70 (mile markers 347–355) and the Kansas Turnpike (mile markers 155–188) are at risk for rapid water accumulation and closures.
Residents are advised to stay off flooded roads, especially near underpasses and drainage ditches. The NWS reminds motorists to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown”, as most flood fatalities occur in vehicles.
This is a fast-developing event—alerts may be extended or upgraded if heavy rainfall continues.
