Topeka, KS – A powerful winter storm is set to blanket Kansas with heavy snow and strong winds beginning Sunday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Blizzard Warning, effective from 3 a.m. Sunday through midnight, with snowfall expected to reach up to 14 inches in some areas.
According to the NWS, central, northeast, and eastern Kansas will experience blizzard conditions, with wind gusts up to 50 mph. Reduced visibility, power outages, and tree damage are likely. Roads will become slick, hazardous, and potentially impassable.
Mixed precipitation will precede the storm Saturday evening into early Sunday, with ice and sleet accumulations of up to four-tenths of an inch in some areas. The heaviest snow is forecast along and north of US-50.
Residents are urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Emergency kits, including flashlights, water, and non-perishable food, should be prepared.
Local authorities warn drivers to monitor road conditions by calling 511 and to stay off roads during the storm. Power companies are on standby to address outages.
