Kankakee, IL – A Kankakee man and his father were arrested early Sunday for allegedly obstructing firefighters responding to a garage fire on West Jeffery Street. Authorities reported approximately $20,000 in damages to the attached garage and part of the house.
According to reports the fire department received a call around 1:10 a.m. Sunday. Crews arrived to find the garage engulfed, with flames spreading to the home. They quickly extinguished the blaze, with no reported injuries. Firefighters say the man and his father allegedly attempted to deny firefighters access, delaying response efforts.
The pair also allegedly misled officials by claiming more people were inside the house. Police intervened, leading to their arrests for obstruction. Three other residents in the home were displaced due to the fire’s impact.
The fire’s cause remains under investigation. Multiple neighboring fire departments, including Bradley, Bourbonnais, and Limestone, provided mutual aid and helped control the fire within two hours.
Local authorities continue to review the incident, focusing on safety protocol and prevention.
