Kankakee, IL – Residents across Kankakee and Iroquois counties are taking part in a large-scale Earth Day “Day of Action” today, with more than two dozen volunteer projects scheduled throughout the region.

According to the City of Kankakee and United Way of Kankakee and Iroquois Counties, the annual event runs from 8:00 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, with activities spread across multiple sites. Organizers say 25 projects are planned, giving participants opportunities to support local neighborhoods, parks, and community spaces.

The Day of Action is designed to bring together volunteers to improve the environment while strengthening community connections. Projects vary by location but focus on cleanup efforts, beautification, and other environmental initiatives aimed at long-term impact.

Participants will wrap up the day with a community celebration at Bird Park in Kankakee at 5:30 p.m., offering a chance for volunteers and residents to gather after the day’s work.

Organizers encourage residents from across Kankakee County, Iroquois County, and nearby areas in the greater Kankakee region to get involved, noting the event is one of the largest Earth Day efforts the counties have hosted.

The Day of Action is part of a broader national initiative led by United Way, where communities across the country participate in volunteer-driven projects each year on Earth Day.

Residents interested in participating can still find project details and sign-up information through United Way’s official website.
