Fayette County, IA – A two-vehicle crash in northeast Iowa early Thursday morning left both vehicles totaled and caused minor injuries, according to local authorities.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 7:17 a.m. Thursday to the intersection of K Avenue (W33) and 50th Street, located between Fayette and Oelwein in Fayette County, part of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls metro region. The crash involved a 2013 Nissan Sentra driven by 42-year-old Angel Hovatter of Oelwein and a 2024 Ford F-550 operated by 33-year-old Mitchell Meyer of Fayette.

Authorities said Hovatter had pulled out in front of Meyer, who was traveling southbound on K Avenue. Meyer’s vehicle then struck the driver’s side of the Sentra. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and are believed to be totaled.

Emergency responders reported only minor injuries at the scene, and no additional details on medical treatment were immediately released.

Investigators noted that dense fog was present at the time of the crash and is believed to have been a contributing factor. Visibility conditions in rural parts of Fayette County were reduced during the early morning commute, potentially impacting driver reaction times.

The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been announced as of Thursday.

Drivers in northeast Iowa are reminded to use caution during low-visibility conditions, especially on rural highways and intersections where sightlines may be limited.
