Jackson, Mississippi – An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect across Mississippi as dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills continue through Tuesday morning, posing serious risks to people, infrastructure, and travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, much of central and northern Mississippi is experiencing Level 4 (Extreme) cold impacts, with wind chills near or below 0 degrees. Southern portions of the state remain under Level 3 (Significant) impacts, where wind chills are near or below 10 degrees.

Overnight low temperatures are expected to fall below 10 degrees in northern Mississippi and below 15 degrees farther south, while daytime highs struggle to reach 32 degrees. Forecasters warn that frostbite can occur in 30 minutes or less, and hypothermia is likely with prolonged exposure.

The NWS also reports that moisture remains on roadways, especially across north and northwest Mississippi, raising concerns for refreezing and black ice overnight, even in areas where melting occurred during the day. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution, particularly during the early Tuesday morning commute.

Officials note that damage to exposed pipes and water main breaks is expected, and the cold outbreak has already contributed to power outages and life-threatening conditions across the region.

These conditions are especially dangerous for overnight workers, early-morning commuters, the elderly, and those without reliable heat.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure, dress in multiple layers, drip faucets, bring pets indoors, and check on neighbors until temperatures moderate later Tuesday.
