Central Point, OR – Detectives are investigating the death of a 2-year-old child who was reported missing early Wednesday morning in rural Central Point before being found dead about an hour later, authorities said.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon received a call at approximately 4:30 a.m. reporting a missing child in the 9900 block of Blackwell Road in rural Central Point.
Jackson County sheriff’s deputies and Oregon State Police troopers responded and immediately began searching for the child. Authorities said the 2-year-old was located deceased at 5:41 a.m.
Detectives are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. Authorities have not released the child’s identity or provided information about how the child died.
The Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit responded to assist the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division.
The multiagency unit includes detectives from the sheriff’s office, Oregon State Police, Medford Police Department, Central Point Police Department and Ashland Police Department. The Jackson County District Attorney’s Office is also part of the unit.
Central Point is in Jackson County in Southern Oregon, northwest of Medford.
The sheriff’s office said the case remains open and ongoing, with detectives following additional leads. No further information was immediately available for release.
Authorities have not announced any arrests or publicly identified any suspects. The sheriff’s office also has not indicated whether investigators believe criminal activity contributed to the child’s death.
