Marquette, Michigan – Temperatures could fall as low as 36 degrees across interior Upper Michigan tonight, creating a patchy frost risk for gardens and sensitive vegetation before warmer, wetter conditions arrive Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, interior temperatures will fall into the upper 30s to lower 40s overnight, with lows ranging from 36 to 42 degrees. Lakeside communities will stay considerably warmer at 50 to 55 degrees. Skies will remain partly cloudy.

Gardeners in colder inland locations should consider covering sensitive plants before temperatures reach their overnight minimums. The sharp temperature difference near Lake Superior will keep the immediate shoreline largely protected from the coldest readings.

Clouds increase Thursday as highs climb to 72 to 78 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to reach western Upper Michigan late Thursday before spreading through the region Thursday night and Friday.

Rain could affect travel Friday, but widespread heavy rainfall is not expected. Most locations should receive less than one-quarter inch. Friday highs will again reach 72 to 78 degrees, with overnight lows generally between 52 and 60 degrees and the warmest readings near the lakeshores.

Residents should protect cold-sensitive vegetation tonight, then monitor weather alerts as batches of showers and thunderstorms cross Upper Michigan Thursday night through Friday.
