Dallas, Texas – Heat index values of 105 to 115 degrees will threaten millions of people across the South through next week, with little overnight relief in urban areas and numerous daily temperature records at risk of being tied or broken.
According to NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center, well-above-average temperatures will continue across the Southeast through Friday while heat intensifies across the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley into next week. Daytime highs could reach the upper 90s to 100s across the Southeast and 100 to 110 degrees across the Southern Plains.
Major to extreme HeatRisk stretches from Texas and Oklahoma east toward Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida. Cities including Dallas, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Atlanta and Jacksonville are within the broader zone of significant heat.
Overnight temperatures may remain above 80 degrees in some urban areas, limiting the body’s ability to recover after daytime heat. Residents should reduce outdoor activity during the hottest afternoon hours, drink water regularly and use air conditioning or cooling centers when needed. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles.
Extreme heat risks are expected to push westward through late August, with the threat potentially continuing into early September. Residents should continue monitoring heat alerts as the prolonged event expands across the South.
