Watseka, IL – Up to 10,000 visitors are expected to gather in Watseka on Monday evening as Union Pacific’s historic “Big Boy” steam train rolls through Iroquois County. The world’s largest steam locomotive will make a brief stop at the North Street crossing around 5 p.m., drawing train enthusiasts from across the Midwest.
According to local officials, the “Big Boy” will pause for 30 minutes before continuing south. Watseka will see one of the largest crowds ever for this rare appearance, as this is the furthest east the locomotive has traveled.
With such a massive influx, Union Pacific stresses the importance of safety. Visitors must maintain a 25-foot distance from the tracks, and local law enforcement will monitor crowd control. Parking is expected to be limited, so early arrival and adherence to parking laws are encouraged.
Local businesses near the Union Pacific crossings offer prime viewing locations and dining options for attendees.
