Indianapolis, IN – Six people safely escaped after an unattended grill caught fire inside a residential garage Monday afternoon, prompting a rapid response from Indianapolis firefighters.
According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, crews were dispatched at approximately 12:02 p.m. to a home in the 400 block of Griffin Road after an unattended grill inside the garage ignited and quickly spread to nearby combustible materials.
Occupants told firefighters they had been using the grill to cook before briefly going inside the home to retrieve an item. When they returned, they discovered the grill was on fire.
The blaze forced three adults and three children to evacuate the residence. Firefighters launched what the department described as an aggressive interior attack, preventing the flames from spreading into the attic and the rest of the home.
Officials said the fire was brought under control in approximately 15 minutes, and no injuries were reported.
Although the home sustained damage, the family has insurance and plans to stay with relatives while repairs are completed, according to the fire department.
The incident serves as a reminder that grills should never be left unattended while in use. Fire officials recommend keeping grills away from garages, homes, decks, and other combustible materials and ensuring they are used only in well-ventilated outdoor areas.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
