Davenport, Iowa – Eastern Iowa and western Illinois could see severe thunderstorms and dangerously high heat index values by Monday afternoon, prompting weather warnings across the region.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities, isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms are possible Monday afternoon and evening, primarily between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. A Level 2 risk area includes Waterloo, while Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and the Quad Cities remain under a Level 1 risk. The primary threats include damaging wind gusts and large hail, with a lower—but not negligible—risk for tornadoes.
Cities such as Cedar Rapids, Burlington, Moline, and Macomb are also bracing for sweltering heat. Heat index values could soar above 105°F on Monday afternoon, with peak readings of 106°F expected in Cedar Rapids and 104°F in Moline. Prolonged outdoor exposure and strenuous activity are discouraged. Residents should stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
The storm threat may intensify as a cold front moves in late Monday, colliding with the oppressive heat and humidity. While not all areas will see storms, any that form could turn severe quickly.
Storm and heat advisories remain in effect through Monday evening, and additional alerts may be issued.
