Davenport, IA – A Flood Watch is in effect for Iowa and Illinois from 3 PM today until 2 AM Wednesday, as severe thunderstorms are expected to bring heavy rainfall and flash flooding. The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned residents to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.

According to the NWS Quad Cities, thunderstorms this afternoon and evening will bring heavy rainfall, with expected totals ranging from 1 to 3 inches in parts of Iowa, including Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, and 1 to 2 inches in areas of Illinois such as the Quad Cities. The heaviest rainfall is predicted along and west of the Mississippi River.

The NWS has indicated that these storms may lead to flash flooding in local rivers, creeks, and streams, particularly in urban areas and locations with poor drainage. The Slight Risk for Excessive Rainfall means there is a 15 to near 40% chance of flash flooding.

The forecasted thunderstorms are also likely to produce damaging winds, large hail, and possibly tornadoes, adding to the severity of the situation. The risk of river flooding is heightened, with potential impacts on the crest timing and height along the Mississippi River.
