Quad Cities – Severe thunderstorms are anticipated to hit Iowa and Illinois this afternoon and evening, posing significant threats including tornadoes, heavy rainfall, and flash flooding. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings for these areas, urging residents to stay vigilant and prepared for potentially hazardous weather.
According to the NWS Quad Cities, all severe weather hazards are possible with today’s storms, particularly focusing on tornadoes and damaging winds. The threat of large hail also remains significant. Thunderstorms are expected to produce heavy rainfall, especially tonight, which could result in flash flooding and rises in local rivers, creeks, and streams. A Flood Watch is in effect from 3 PM today until 2 AM Wednesday.
The severe weather outlook places parts of Iowa and Illinois under a Level 3/5 risk for severe storms. This includes areas such as Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and the Quad Cities. The NWS highlights that the tornado threat has increased northward to Highway 30 in Iowa.
Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, including having multiple ways to receive weather alerts. The potential for flash flooding is heightened due to heavy rainfall, with urban areas and locations with poor drainage particularly at risk.
