Indiana – Dark clouds are building fast across central Indiana, and roads could turn slick within hours as storms fire up by late afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, thunderstorms will develop across southwestern and central Indiana today, expanding statewide into the evening. Some storms may turn severe, especially west and northwest of Indianapolis, with damaging wind gusts over 50 mph and a brief tornado risk. Heavy rain could exceed a quarter inch in spots, reducing visibility on I-65, I-70, and I-69 during peak travel hours .

Indianapolis will see increasing clouds early, followed by scattered storms by mid to late afternoon. By evening, lightning and bursts of heavy rain may slow traffic across Marion, Hamilton, and Hendricks counties. Winds may gust past 20 mph even outside storms, adding to hazardous driving conditions. Plan extra time and avoid flooded roadways.

Storm chances linger into Saturday, with showers and a few thunderstorms continuing through the day. While severe risk drops, wet pavement and reduced visibility remain concerns. By Sunday, skies clear and cooler air settles in, with highs near 58°F.

A sharp temperature drop arrives by early Monday, when parts of central Indiana could dip near freezing. That raises a concern for patchy frost and possible slick spots if moisture lingers on roads and bridges. Drivers should stay alert for early morning hazards.

Looking ahead, a warming trend builds by Tuesday with sunshine returning and temperatures climbing into the mid-70s. More spring warmth is expected late next week.
