DeMotte, IN — A Jasper County man was arrested Tuesday following an alleged domestic violence incident involving minors at a rural home southwest of DeMotte.

According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence the evening of April 29 after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance. The female victim told deputies that she had returned home from work and found the house in disarray, prompting her to throw a pillow at Nicholas J. Aponte, 31, who was reportedly asleep on the couch. She alleged that Aponte then chased her and placed his hands around her neck, restricting her ability to breathe.

Deputies said security camera footage supported the victim’s account, showing Aponte approaching her aggressively in the kitchen and grabbing her by the neck. Additional video footage reportedly captured him yelling and stomping around the home during the incident.

Authorities noted that children were present at the time of the altercation. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the minors took shelter in a closet after witnessing the confrontation and hearing the suspect’s shouting.

Aponte was arrested at the scene and transported to the Jasper County Detention Center. He was booked on multiple charges, including one count of strangulation and two counts of domestic battery, all classified as Level 6 felonies under Indiana law.

Officials emphasized that all criminal charges are allegations and Aponte is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
