College Park, MD – A fatal collision involving a pedestrian early Monday morning temporarily shut down part of the inner loop of I-495 in Prince George’s County.

The pedestrian, who has not yet been identified, was struck and killed while reportedly attempting to cross the highway on foot, officials said.

According to Maryland State Police, troopers from the College Park Barrack responded around 3:12 a.m. to a report of a crash on the inner loop of I-495, just south of U.S. Route 1 in College Park. Preliminary findings suggest the incident began when the driver of a Honda Civic parked on the left shoulder of the outer loop for unknown reasons, then exited the vehicle and tried to run across the inner loop lanes.

During the attempted crossing, the individual was struck by a Toyota and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation. Officials say charges could be considered pending a review with the Office of the State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County.

Road closures tied to the investigation spanned more than four hours, with support from the Prince George’s County Police Department and the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration.

The investigation remains active, and authorities are working to positively identify the pedestrian involved.
