Indianapolis, IN – A prolonged stretch of dangerous summer heat is expected to grip Indiana this week, with the hottest temperatures and highest humidity arriving Wednesday and Thursday, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses across much of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, above-normal temperatures will continue through at least Saturday, with afternoon highs climbing into the low to mid-90s during the middle of the week. Combined with high humidity, heat index values could reach as high as 105 degrees in some locations.

Forecasters say Wednesday and Thursday are expected to bring the most dangerous conditions, with a Major (Level 3 of 4) Heat Risk forecast for much of central Indiana. The heat risk remains elevated into Friday before easing slightly by the weekend, although temperatures are still expected to remain above seasonal averages.

The prolonged heat can be especially hazardous for older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions, outdoor workers, and anyone without access to effective cooling.

The National Weather Service recommends limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, taking frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded locations, wearing lightweight clothing, and drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated. Residents are also encouraged to check on neighbors and relatives who may be vulnerable to the heat.

Anyone planning outdoor activities should closely monitor the forecast, as additional heat advisories or warnings may be issued if conditions intensify.

Officials also remind drivers never to leave children or pets unattended inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening in just a matter of minutes.
