Jasper County, IN – A 26-year-old man, Rhyker Earl, died after a medical emergency and struggle with Jasper County deputies on September 8. Deputies were called to assist Keener Township Emergency Medical Services after Earl displayed signs of mental distress and physical resistance during the medical call.
Earl, described as being in an “excited state,” was handcuffed by deputies to ensure his safety and the safety of medical responders. Despite their efforts, Earl became unresponsive and later died after being transported to the hospital.
According to a statement from Sheriff Pat Williamson, the family’s attorney issued a press release allegedly filled with ‘inaccuracies’ leading to claims have led to increased scrutiny of the deputies’ actions that evening. Sheriff Williamson refuted the claims, stating body-worn camera footage showed deputies placing a pillow under Earl’s head, with his breathing unrestricted while the family reports officers “stayed on top of Rhyker for more than 15 minutes, with his face in a pillow.”
The Indiana State Police are conducting an independent investigation, and bodycam footage is expected to be released once cleared. Family members, present during the incident, reportedly urged Earl to remain calm, while assisting deputies in de-escalating the situation.
Further details are expected once the investigation concludes.
