Indianapolis, IN – Over half of Indiana’s counties are currently under burn bans due to increased wildfire risks caused by dry weather conditions. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security reported 54 of the state’s 92 counties now have bans in effect. The number of counties affected is expected to grow as weather conditions remain dry.
According to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, the bans prohibit activities like open burning, campfires, and fireworks. Residents are also encouraged to safely discard smoking materials in approved containers to prevent accidental fires. Fire extinguishers or hoses should be kept close by when grilling outdoors.
The state’s emergency services remind residents to check local burn ban statuses before lighting any fires. Violating burn bans could result in fines and increase the likelihood of uncontrolled fires. Many counties also require citizens to be aware of emergency exits from buildings in case of fire-related evacuations.
