Springfield, Illinois – Illinois has emerged as the nation’s most active tornado state of 2026, with 156 preliminary tornado reports logged through Sunday, putting it well ahead of every other state in the country.

Data shows Illinois leading the national rankings by a wide margin. Mississippi ranks second with 82 reports, followed by Missouri with 62, Iowa with 61, and Kansas with 52. Illinois has recorded nearly twice as many tornado reports as Mississippi and more than double the totals reported in several traditional Tornado Alley states.

The elevated numbers reflect a highly active severe weather season across the Midwest, where repeated storm systems have tracked through the Mississippi and Ohio valleys during the spring and early summer months.

It’s important to note that these figures represent preliminary tornado reports, not finalized tornado counts. According to National Weather Service procedures, storm surveys and investigations can later confirm, combine, or remove reports after additional analysis.

Communities across central, northern and southern Illinois have experienced multiple rounds of severe weather this year, including damaging winds, large hail and numerous tornado warnings. Several significant severe weather events have also affected neighboring states throughout the Midwest.

With peak severe weather season continuing into summer, emergency managers encourage residents to maintain multiple ways to receive warnings and review shelter plans before the next round of storms develops.

Additional tornado reports and survey updates are expected as the 2026 severe weather season continues across the Midwest and Ohio Valley.
