EAST ST. LOUIS – A 15-year-old from East St. Louis is now in custody and has been charged with First Degree Murder and Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking in connection with the death of a dedicated nurse.
The tragedy unfolded on August 27, 2022, when Harriett Childers, a 49-year-old full-time nurse and ride-share driver from St. Louis, lost her life in a heinous act. Her body was discovered in the 1800 block of Gaty Avenue, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound.
According to reports the East St. Louis Police Department’s requested Illinois State Police (ISP) initiate an extensive death investigation, leading to the arrest of the teenage suspect. As the case unraveled, the suspect’s identity remains undisclosed due to their age. The teen is currently detained at the St. Clair Juvenile Detention Center, awaiting trial on charges of First Degree Murder (Class M Felony) and Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking (Class X Felony).
East St. Louis Police Department, St. Clair County Coroner’s Office, ISP Crime Scene Services, FBI, and the United States Attorney Southern District of Illinois, have all cooperated in aiding the investigation.
